In 1981 Jon Ewing founded Landtrends, Inc. The company grew into one of Southern California's leading Landscape Construction and Maintenance firms with over 1000 employees and offices in San Diego as well as Las Vegas, Nevada. The firm offered the area's premier Sports Turf Division with clients including:

• The San Diego Padres
• The San Diego Chargers
• The United States Olympic Training Center
• The San Diego Spirit (Women¹s professional soccer team)

Commercial projects included:

• Ziegfried & Roy Animal Kennels at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas
  
• San Diego Hilton Hotel, Mission Bay
• Marriott's Dana Point Resort
• Otay International Center
• Carlsbad International Center
• Aviara Community in Carlsbad
• Hilton Hotel Mission Valley
• Red Lion Inn Mission Valley

In 1993, Jon and his brother Tom Co-Founded, Miramar Wholesale Nurseries, Inc. The Nursery acquired Vista Hill Nursery in 1996, and became the Largest Wholesale Nursery in San Diego.

The combined companies specialized in the following areas:

• Commercial Landscape Management
• Residential Estate Landscape Construction
• Commercial Landscape Construction
• Sports Turf Care
• Water Management
• Wholesale Plant Material and Landscape Supplies
• Contract and Specialty Plant Growing Operations
• Professional Athletic Field Management and Installations

Both operations were sold to a public company and leading national consolidator of landscape service companies in 1998.


In 2004, Jon worked as a special consultant to the San Diego Padres directly responsible for developing a landscape maintenance program for PETCO Park. This included developing their Integrated Pest Management Plan, contractor selection and bidding process, etc.


In 2005 Jon and his brother Tom acquired Butler's Mill, Inc. Butler's specialized in the sale of horticultural wholesale supplies. In tandem, TurfFirst was founded as a division of Butler's. The TurfFirst operations include:

• Sport Venue Supplies
• Sports Venue Consulting Services
• Sports Venue Products
• Field Day promotions at PETCO Park and Qualcomm Stadium

In 2007, both operations we sold to a public company.

• Orchestrated and/or participated in numerous business acquisitions.

• Joint venture developer of numerous single family and multi family developments.
• San Diego Padres consultant for PETCO Park. Responsible for developing their landscape maintenance guidelines, Integrated Pest Management Plan, and assisting in vendor selection.
